We come in and hold it. Not a talk, not a slideshow. A structured conversation your pupils lead as much as we do.
The session opens with a question rather than an introduction: what does everyone in this room have in common? Four or five pupils answer. Their answers — not ours — become the material for the next forty-five minutes.
What follows is a structured conversation about how societies keep constructing lines between people, and about the people across history who refused them. Ancient Rome. Victorian Britain. The present day. The community kitchen that has fed anyone who walks through the door for five hundred years and still runs in Leeds today. The astronauts who came back saying the borders were invisible.
Pupils talk roughly as much as the facilitator. There are pair discussions and open questions with no correct answer, and silences are allowed to sit. The session ends on a question handed back to the room, not a summary.
Belonging isn't one community's idea. It's a human one.
The programme is rooted in Sikh ethics — Sarbat da Bhala, the wellbeing of all — and delivered in language open to everyone. Two versions are available: a universal session for PSHE, SMSC and Citizenship, and an RE-anchored session for religious education and interfaith work. Both suit pupils of any faith or none.

Most schools fund this from RE, PSHE, inclusion or pupil premium rather than from a general enrichment pot.

Multiple sessions in one visit reduce the per-session cost — most schools book two or three back-to-back across year groups, which is the most efficient way to use a visit.
Teacher CPD is priced separately and can be added to a delivery day.
Half days, carousel days and whole-school programmes are quoted on request, based on the number of sessions and year groups involved.
Annual and multi-year agreements are available where you want sequenced delivery across key stages rather than a single visit.

Questions schools ask
No. The programme is rooted in Sikh ethics — the principle of Sarbat da Bhala, the wellbeing of all — but the universal session is delivered in language open to every faith and none, and is designed for PSHE, SMSC and Citizenship. Pupils are never asked to participate in worship or affirm any belief. Where a school wants the RE-anchored version for religious education or interfaith work, that is available as a separate option.
Yes, and deliberately so. Sessions explore historical and ethical questions about human worth and belonging, not contemporary party politics or contested current affairs. Pupils are asked open questions with no correct answer and are not steered toward conclusions. We're happy to share the session outline in advance so you can check it against your own political impartiality duty.
Every facilitator holds an enhanced DBS certificate and has completed safeguarding training. Public liability insurance is in place. Delivery is by Grass Roots Opportunities (GRO), a constituted Leeds not-for-profit with filed accounts, working with schools, universities and communities for over five years. We'll send the certificates and our safeguarding policy with your quote — tick the box on the form.
It has. Specialist provisions have confirmed the pace and level were appropriate, and SEND groups have sustained engagement for a full session. There's no expectation that pupils sit still or stay silent — the format is built around them talking. Tell us about the group on the form and we'll adapt before we arrive.
On its own, no — which is why a booking isn't just the session. You get discussion cards and classroom activities, a teacher follow-up pack, and a staff debrief on how to facilitate the follow-ups yourself. Schools that want genuine change book sequenced delivery across year groups rather than a single visit, and we'd rather have that conversation honestly up front.
Most often RE, PSHE, inclusion or pupil premium — not a general enrichment pot. Because the feedback and evidence pack is written up for you, the work is also citable in inclusion, EDI and cohesion reporting, which is often the line that makes it straightforward to fund.
We're Leeds-based and deliver across Leeds, Bradford, Ilkley and the wider West Yorkshire area. We've travelled further where a school has made the case. Ask on the form and we'll tell you honestly whether it's workable.
Two to three weeks is comfortable. We book in term blocks and turn away more requests than we can take, so the further ahead you ask, the more likely we can give you the date and slot you want.
